Symonds Close

Westman Road, Winchester

Formerly an under-used recreation ground and garage court in the Weeke estate, this site was identified as one of the first to be developed by Winchester City Council’s New Homes Delivery Team. T2 were appointed in 2013 to develop capacity studies for the site whilst the brief was being formulated. The final layout achieves 12 dwellings, ranging in size from 1 to 4 bedrooms. The smaller 1 and 2 bedroom units are grouped around a communal green space and are designed for ‘down-sizers’ in order to free up existing family housing stock within the estate. The larger 3 and 4 bedroom units are for families and address a ‘play street’ which is overlooked by large corner windows from the kitchen-dining spaces. Gaps between the houses accommodates and conceals the car parking ensuring the ‘street’ is kept clear for safe play. The timber-frame houses meet Lifetime Homes criteria and Code Level 5. The scheme was shortlisted for the Structural Timber Awards in 2016 and winner of the ‘Residential Quality Place Award’ at the Solent Design Awards in 2016.
