Oliver’s Battery, Winchester

This replacement dwelling on a large plot with open views of the South Downs is situated on the edge of the settlement boundary in Winchester. The 5 bedroom self-build dwelling has been designed to root itself within the sensitive landscape.

Single storey in height, a simple form with a standing seam metal roof, akin to an agricultural building. The mono pitch roof follows the topography of the sloping site and the overhang provides solar shading and modelling to the façade. The split-level, U-shaped plan forms a central courtyard garden, which creates a sense of enclosure and privacy to the amenity space and offers some protection from the elements due to the site’s exposed nature. Pale multi brick walls, a reference to the chalk downland and backdrop of Oliver’s Battery is the predominant building material, which gives variation in the tone and texture to the dwelling’s appearance.
