The Cavendish Centre

Winnall, Winchester

The mixed-use redevelopment of the Cavendish Centre site in Winnall will provide 1300 square metres of flexible office and co-working space in a 5 storey building, connected to an 88 bed student accommodation building. The buildings are arranged around two landscaped courtyards with the office being the main focus of the scheme, located centrally on the site. The entrance courtyard directly in front of the office building provides a formal green space with seating. The rear communal courtyard is a more informal landscaped setting providing external amenity space for the students.

The student accommodation is on the eastern side of the site with the majority of the study bedrooms looking into the landscaped courtyards and gardens. A footpath through the centre of the site links the two courtyard spaces providing pedestrian permeability. The majority of the office parking and cycle storage is hidden under the buildings.

The office has glazed façades on the north & south elevations allowing views through to the trees to the south of the site. The windows have vertical fins providing both privacy, preventing oblique views into the student accommodation, and also providing solar shading to the offices. The two uses of the building are distinguished by contrasting materials and colours. The student accommodation will be clad in a light-coloured concrete brick creating more domestic feel for the students. The office will be clad in black metal cladding with crisp detailing.
