Wolvesey Palace

Winchester

Wolvesey Palace is a Grade 1 listed property and Scheduled Ancient Monument, and home of the Bishop of Winchester. The majority of the current Palace building dates from the 17th Century, but incorporates the chapel dating from the 15th Century, and some later early 20th Century extensions.

In 2018 T2 Architects were instructed by The Church Commissioners for England to assist with roofing repairs to the building over the Bishop’s private residence. This has involved inspection, creation of technical documents, and liaison with the Conservation Officer, Ecologist, and Contractor.

In tandem with the re-roofing works, we were also asked to undertake work to achieve Scheduled Ancient Monument consent for the repair of the tiled capping to one of the walls around the precinct to neighbouring Wolvesey Castle. This included a thorough condition schedule, analysis of the lime mortar to the capping, and identification of some valuable historic fabric, such as crested mediaeval ridge tiles.

After preparing detailed documents and managing the application process, together with liaising closely with Historic England, Scheduled Ancient Monument Consent for the repairs was achieved, and the works are now moving ahead.
