Woodside Barns

Cumbria

A project to convert an unlisted, but historically interesting, set of traditional stone barns in the Eden Valley of Cumbria to a form new dwelling.

The arrangement of the three primary barns and a number of smaller wings around an existing courtyard provided a strong context for this conversion. This was further enhanced by the spectacular views from site to the East, where Cross Fell was clearly visible rising from the other side of the valley.

The scheme took the predominantly introspective form of the vernacular barns and sought to introduce an honest and striking language of new interventions as part of the proposals, carving openings into the stonework to expose the views out across the landscape where previously the walls had been generally solid. This resulted in a contemporary and exciting form, which maintained the legibility of the original buildings.
